Congratulations Gold Medalist Regan Smith From Your Friends at FOSS!

The Paris Olympics are over but we’re still celebrating in its golden glow! For the past few years, we’ve been checking in on Regan Smith, the Lakeville, Minnesota native and former FOSS student who is one of the fastest women in the world in the pool – and we’re so excited and awed by her performance in Paris!

Regan has shared with us her thoughts on resilience, perseverance, and competition, offering us a glimpse of her life in and out of the pool. All the work she put in paid off this year with five Olympic medals (two gold, three silver) to add to the three) she won in Tokyo in 2021 (two silver and a bronze.)

One of the busiest swimmers at the Games, Regan won a medal in every event she participated in. Her results:

  • Gold medal in the women’s 4×100 medley relay, which set a world record of 3:49.63. Regan led off the race with a blistering backstroke.
  • Gold medal in the mixed 4×100 medley relay; Smith swam the backstroke in a preliminary heat for the team, helping earn the USA the fastest qualifying time in the event.
  • Silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke, with a time of 57.33 seconds
  • Silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, with a time of 2:04.26
  • Silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly, with a time of 2:03.84

Her five medals tied her for the most medals won by a single U.S. athlete in Paris (fellow swimmer Torri Huske also won 5). With eight total Olympic medals in her career, she joins rarefied air among U.S. female swimmers; only a handful of women have won more Olympic swimming medals for Team USA.
