How long have you worked for FOSS?
One Turtle Year!
What is your favorite part about working for FOSS?
How authentic the environment is! My coworkers are silly, and it makes me feel at home. I love the big “families helping families” world!
Tell us your favorite FOSS story.
My favorite story is my daughter’s love of water through the FOSS lifestyle. She’s 18 months old and only cares about splashing and blowing her bubbles with a wild, wide smile!
What is your favorite level/age group to teach and why?
I love teaching Water Adjustments, Float Ups, and Flip to Breathe progressions. My favorite age groups are Babies and Littles.
What is your favorite skill to teach and why?
Bird Flaps, because that gives swimmers a chance to relax, and I get to be silly and sing songs to them.
Can you recount a student of yours who experienced a major “lightbulb” moment when you were with them?
I had a baby student who didn’t “like her eyes wet” and gave up on participating with Mom. One day, we put goggles on halfway through class and practiced humming our bubbles. We were singing to our mermaids together and watched the bubbles float up top. From that day on, she was so excited to participate in every activity. She started listening to Mom and mastered those dreaded back floats and flips. She wouldn’t use the goggles every time, but I believe it just gave her an idea of what is under the water, so she realized it’s an awesome world under there! And bubbles are fun to make! Mom was super excited and surprised at how her swimmer’s confidence and trust skyrocketed.
Have you swum competitively? What was your most fulfilling achievement, if so?
I swam on my middle and high school swim teams. I was fast, but I didn’t have endurance, so I was great in medley races! I wish I’d swum at FOSS before that—I would have been even greater!
Anything else you really wish you could tell parents about you as they bring their children to FOSS?
I LOVE PICKLES!
