Faces of FOSS: Sarajane Larson
How long have you worked for FOSS?
Time flies when you are having fun, but I am pretty sure it has been 5 years!
What is your favorite part of working for FOSS?
I love that every day is fun and different!! I enjoy working with the kids, staff and families. I have the opportunity to wear so many hats at Foss and each shift is so different. Most days it is nearly impossible to get me to leave because I just love my job, co-workers and families so much.
What is your favorite level to teach?
Little 1’s. I love their energy! I can be 100% over the top and they love it!
What special skills do you bring?
I love to work with the criers! It might sound crazy but each kiddo who comes in crying is a different puzzle. What works for one crier could be the worst idea ever for the next. What worked 5 mins ago, might never work again. But then it clicks and it is so rewarding to see them sit on the top step waiting impatiently for their turn with a smile on their face!
What challenges did you have to overcome when you learned to swim?
Despite having lessons as a child, I never truly learned to swim without plugging my nose. It was not until I started working at FOSS that I learned how to hum and make bubbles out of my nose as I swam. I used to be embarrassed that it took me so long, but my story has helped me connect with so many swimmers who are having the same problem.
Can you share a favorite breakthrough moment you observed in a swimmer?
More of a type of breakthrough than a specific story. My favorite is when a swimmer is struggling so much that even strangers connect and pay attention. You don’t even realize it until the swimmer gets its and a whole bench or room of strangers start cheering for them and the kiddo feels like a super star!
