Faces of FOSS: Kali Gutierrez
Highland Park, IL
How long have you worked for FOSS?
Just over 3 years! Time flies when you’re doing what you love!
What is your favorite part of working for FOSS?
Aside from building great relationships with the staff and families…I love having the opportunity to help make the FOSS experience as great as possible; like giving each family an amazing welcome or setting up the office and store with fun displays.
What is your favorite skill to teach and why?
I love that we teach Safety Turns and the Safety Stroke. I was surprised by how many parents tell us that near-accidents at the lake or pool were avoided thanks to their swimmers remembering what to do from class.
How did you feel about the water and learning to swim as a child?
With many boat outings, I loved being around the water. But I was still afraid of swimming in open water since I wasn’t able to float. FOSS instructors helped me master my center of buoyancy and the safety stroke, so now I am much more confidant swimming in large bodies of water!
What else would you like parents to know?
Everyone is different and learns at their own pace. If you have a hesitant swimmer, consistency and encouragement is the key to becoming a strong swimmer. Just be patient and cheer your little one (or yourself) on!
